Cannabis drinks look familiar: a can, a bottle, a shot. But they work like edibles in some ways and unlike them in others, and the label can be confusing. How much THC is in one drink? How long until you feel it? Is it the same as a hemp-derived drink from a different store? This guide covers the basics for adults 21+.
The Quick Answer
- In New Jersey, a single-serving cannabis beverage is capped at 5 mg of active THC. That’s lower than the 10 mg cap for other single-serving products.
- Start low. A 2.5–5 mg drink is a reasonable first step.
- Be patient. Onset time varies by product, so don’t assume a drink works instantly.
How NJ Limits Beverage Doses
New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission guidance says each single serving of a cannabis product shall contain no more than 10 mg of active THC, except that each single-serving beverage shall contain no more than 5 mg of active THC. That means a regulated cannabis drink in a dispensary should state its THC per serving, and a single serving should not exceed 5 mg.
Read the label carefully. Some bottles contain more than one serving, and the total THC on the package can be higher than the dose per serving. For the math, see our guide to edible dosing by the numbers.
Cannabis Drinks vs Hemp-Derived Drinks
You may also see THC drinks that are made from hemp rather than cannabis. They can be labeled differently, may come in different strengths, and may be sold in different kinds of stores. If you see a drink on our site described as hemp-derived, don’t assume it follows the same rules or the same dose as a dispensary cannabis beverage. Check the product page for the milligrams per serving and the servings per container. If it isn’t clear, ask.
Onset and Duration
Like edibles, drinks are swallowed and processed by the body, so the effects may take longer to appear than with inhaled cannabis. Some fast-acting products use technology meant to speed that up, but timing differs by person and product. A safe approach:
- Take one drink and wait. Give it at least an hour or two before considering more.
- Don’t assume a fast-acting label means instant.
- If you’ve eaten recently, expect your experience to differ from drinking on an empty stomach.

How to Choose a Drink
- Check the THC per serving. Look for 2.5 mg or 5 mg if you’re new.
- Check servings per container. A bottle may hold more than one.
- Look at the ratio. Some drinks combine THC with CBD or other cannabinoids.
- Look at the ingredients. Check for sugar, caffeine or allergens.
- Pick a flavor you’ll enjoy. It makes pacing easier.
How to Dose a Cannabis Drink
- First time: start with 2.5 mg or half a 5 mg drink, if it’s resealable.
- Don’t sip all evening. Because onset is delayed, slowly adding more can add up before you feel the first dose.
- Avoid mixing with alcohol. Don’t combine a cannabis drink with a cocktail.
- Keep track. Note the drink, the dose, and how you felt.
Drinks Versus Gummies and Chocolates
- Lower cap per serving: beverages top out at 5 mg, while other servings can be up to 10 mg.
- Easy to pace: some people find a drink easier to measure out than a gummy.
- Discreet: a drink at home looks like any other drink, so store it well away from others.

Storage and Safety
This matters more with drinks than with most products: they look like ordinary beverages. Store them in a place where children, guests and pets can’t mistake them for something else, keep them in their original packaging with labels intact, and clearly mark any opened container. Follow the storage directions on the label — many drinks need refrigeration after opening.
Responsible Use
Never drive after using cannabis, and don’t share your drink with anyone under 21. Public consumption is prohibited in New Jersey.
Reading a Beverage Label
A few examples of how to do the math. These are illustrations, not products on our menu:
- “One 12 oz can, 5 mg THC per serving, 1 serving per container”: the whole can is 5 mg.
- “One bottle, 2 servings, 5 mg THC per serving”: the whole bottle is 10 mg. Drinking all of it means 10 mg.
- “4-pack, 2.5 mg per can”: each can is 2.5 mg, and the whole pack is 10 mg.
The same rule applies as for other edibles: total mg divided by servings gives you mg per serving. For more on this, see our dosing guide.
A Sample First-Night Plan
- Choose a drink with 2.5 mg or 5 mg per serving.
- Have a light snack first, not on a completely empty stomach.
- Drink it at home, in a comfortable place.
- Wait at least an hour or two before considering anything more.
- Write down the product, dose and how it went.
What About Mixing It Into a Cocktail?
We don’t recommend it. Mixing cannabis with alcohol makes it hard to judge how you feel, and the effects of each can be harder to predict together. If you want a drink-style experience, a cannabis beverage on its own is a more predictable way to find your level.
Common Mistakes
- Assuming it works like a cocktail. A cannabis drink doesn’t hit on a drinking timeline.
- Finishing multi-serving bottles. Check the servings before you sip.
- Leaving it where others can reach it. Drinks look ordinary. Store them out of sight.
- Forgetting about tolerance. Your usual number may not be the right one after a break.
Shelf Life and Storage
Check the label for storage directions and a best-by date. Many beverages are best kept cool, and some need refrigeration after opening. Don’t drink one that tastes or smells off. Keep cannabis products out of reach of children and pets, and in their original packaging.
