The number on the front of an edible package is the most important thing on it, and the one people misread most. “100 mg” sounds like a lot, until you realize it’s the whole package, not a single gummy. “10 mg” sounds small, until you take three. And if you’ve ever cut a gummy in half and wondered whether you just halved the dose, you’re asking the right question.
This guide is about the math: how to read the milligrams on an edible, what the common dose levels look like, how to split a package into doses, and how to pace yourself. For product types and general buying advice, read our edibles buying guide; for what to do if an edible hits harder than planned, see The Edible Experience: Managing Your High. The Two Numbers on Every Label
Every edible has two milligram figures, and they mean different things:
- Per serving: the THC in one piece (one gummy, one square of chocolate, one drink).
- Per package (total): the THC in everything in the package.
The formula is simple: total mg ÷ number of servings = mg per serving.
A 10-pack labeled “100 mg THC” has 10 mg per piece. A 20-pack labeled “100 mg THC” has 5 mg per piece. Same total, very different dose per gummy. Always check the piece count before you assume anything.
What New Jersey Allows Per Serving
New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission guidance sets a limit of 10 mg of active THC per single serving of an adult-use cannabis product. That’s why you’ll see so many products built around 10 mg pieces, and why packages are divided into servings. Some products, like a 20-pack at 100 mg, use smaller pieces of around 5 mg. If you’re looking at a product and can’t tell what a serving is, ask a budtender or check the product page.
The Dose Ladder
Here’s how people generally think about edible dose levels. These are common shorthand, not medical guidance, and everyone responds differently:
- 1–2.5 mg: a very light dose, often called a microdose. A good way to see how an edible feels without committing to much.
- 5 mg: a common starting point for newer consumers.
- 10 mg: the standard adult-use serving. Many occasional and regular consumers settle here.
- 15–20 mg: two servings. For people with experience and tolerance.
- 25 mg and up: a high dose that most newer consumers should avoid.
If you’ve never had an edible before, start at the bottom — 2.5 or 5 mg — and treat that as your whole night. You can always take more another day.
Why Edible Doses Feel Different
A milligram of THC in a gummy doesn’t feel like a milligram in a vape. When you eat THC, it’s processed in your digestive system and liver first, so it takes longer to feel and tends to last longer than inhaled cannabis. A few things influence how an edible feels:
- Your tolerance. Regular use usually means you’ll need more for the same effect.
- Food in your stomach. A full stomach can slow the onset; an empty one can speed it up.
- Body differences. Metabolism and body size affect how you process an edible.
- The product itself. Gummies, chocolate and tablets can all act differently, and fast-acting formulas may act sooner.
- Other things you’ve consumed. Alcohol or other substances can change how you feel.
Timing: Wait Before You Redose
Edibles can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in, and sometimes longer. The mistake that causes the most trouble is taking more because nothing has happened yet. Wait a full 90 minutes to 2 hours before deciding to take another piece. If you’re not sure whether you feel it, wait. Taking a second dose too early is how a pleasant evening becomes an uncomfortable one.
How to Split an Edible
Splitting a larger piece or package into smaller doses is a common way to find your level. A few rules of thumb:
- Use the scoring on the product. Chocolate bars and tablets often have marked segments that match the dose per piece.
- Be careful cutting gummies. A gummy’s dose isn’t always perfectly even throughout. Cutting one in half gives you roughly half, not exactly half. If you need accuracy, choose a product that comes in the dose you want.
- Don’t eyeball a bar. If a chocolate bar isn’t pre-scored, you won’t know how much you’re getting.
- Save the rest properly. Reseal the package and store it somewhere cool and dark, out of reach of kids and pets. See our storage tips.
A Sample First Night Plan
- Pick a low dose. One 2.5 mg or 5 mg piece.
- Take it with a light snack. Not on a completely empty stomach.
- Set the scene. Be home, comfortable and with nowhere to be.
- Wait. At least 90 minutes to 2 hours before considering more.
- Write it down. Note the product, the dose, the time and how you felt. Next time, you’ll have a reference.
- Adjust slowly. If you want more next time, go up by a small step, like 2.5 mg.
Multi-Serving Packages: Pacing Yourself
A jar of 10 gummies is not a single dose — it’s ten. Keep track of how many you’ve had. If you’re sharing with friends, agree in advance on how many each person takes, since a package can look “small” and still be a lot of THC. And don’t keep adding pieces as the night goes on: since edibles take a while to take effect, extra pieces can pile up before the first one has finished.
A Quick Label Checklist
- How many mg of THC per serving?
- How many servings in the package?
- Does it also contain CBD or other cannabinoids? (A 1:1 product has equal THC and CBD.)
- Is it a fast-acting or a traditional formula?
- When was it packaged?
If anything isn’t clear, ask. That’s what the team is there for.
If an Edible Feels Like Too Much
If you took more than you meant to, stay calm and stay put. Find a comfortable place, sip some water, and remember that the feeling will pass with time. Avoid driving and avoid taking more. If you feel unwell or are concerned, seek medical help. Our managing your high guide has more on how to ride out an edible that’s stronger than expected.
Reading Real Labels
Here are a few common label formats and what they tell you, with the math:
- “10-pack, 100 mg THC”: 100 ÷ 10 = 10 mg per piece.
- “20-pack, 100 mg THC”: 100 ÷ 20 = 5 mg per piece.
- “2-pack, 20 mg THC”: 20 ÷ 2 = 10 mg per piece.
- “Chocolate bar, 100 mg THC, 10 squares”: 100 ÷ 10 = 10 mg per square.
If the label shows a package total but no piece count, the product page should list servings. If it doesn’t, ask before you buy.
Tolerance Changes Over Time
The dose that felt like a lot last month might feel mild after a few weeks of regular use, and the reverse is true after a break. Don’t assume your usual number is right every time — check in with yourself, especially if you’ve been away from edibles for a while. Raising your dose in small steps is easier to manage than jumping up.
Don’t Stack Without Thinking
Combining an edible with another form of cannabis, or with alcohol, makes it harder to judge how you feel. If you’re trying a new edible dose, keep everything else simple that night. Ride it out on its own, and write down how it went.
A Simple Dose Diary
A note on your phone is enough. Track:
- The product and brand
- The dose in mg
- The time you took it
- When you first felt it
- How the evening went, in a few words
- What you’d change next time
After a few entries, you’ll know your own number far better than any chart can tell you.
FAQ
How many mg should I start with?
Many first-timers start at 2.5 to 5 mg. Everyone is different, so start low and go slow.
Is 10 mg a lot?
It’s the standard adult-use serving in New Jersey, and it’s a comfortable dose for many experienced consumers. For a first-timer, it can be more than needed.
How long do edibles take to work?
Typically 30 minutes to 2 hours, sometimes longer. Wait at least 90 minutes to 2 hours before taking more.
Can I cut a gummy in half?
You can, but it won’t always be an exact half. For accuracy, buy a lower-dose product instead.
What’s the difference between a 100 mg 10-pack and a 100 mg 20-pack?
The total is the same, but the 10-pack has about 10 mg per piece and the 20-pack about 5 mg per piece.
